Painted cartoon by Starr Wood, 1915
This cartoon shows the Mayor of Hertford Alexander Purkiss Ginn in the centre with a model of Hertford Castle on a trolley and it is believed to mark the occasion of Hertford Borough Council signing the lease for Hertford Castle in late 1911. Mayor Alexander Purkiss Ginn was instrumental in negotiating the lease of the Castle between Hertford Borough Council and the owner Lord Salisbury. In 1912, the Castle grounds were opened to the public. Hertford Town Council still occupies the Castle Gatehouse.
Starr Wood was a talented caricaturist who moved to Hertford (West Street) in 1908. He became a regular contributor to Punch magazine.
