Old Clibbon’s Post, Datchworth

Clibbon’s post, Bramfield Lane. In the early 1780s, there had been a spate of violent robberies in the Hertford area by an unknown highwayman. Clibbon’s post marked the spot where the villain was finally shot and captured on 28th December 1782. Walter Clibbon’s identity was not revealed until he was shot. He had been posing as a deaf pie-man patrolling the Hertford inns, selling his wares, secretly listening to the conversations of market traders, noting those with large profits. Several generations of Post have since existed and the current post can be seen on the edge of the wood on the Datchworth to Bramfield Road.
